Nemunda
Nemunda takes its name from two Latin words: nemus, meaning a grove or woodland, and unda, meaning a wave or water.
This handcrafted lamp combines a simple, elegant and harmonious form with a dynamic pattern that reveals its full character after dark.
A quieter form
Its elm base was inspired by the circles spreading across the surface of water when a drop falls into it.
The gentle, flowing shape gives the lamp a sense of calm and allows the sculpted gourd and resin dome to remain the main focus.
Beyond the form
The dynamic geometry of Nemunda extends beyond the object itself. As light passes through its carved structure, the pattern unfolds across the surrounding walls.
By rotating either the entire lamp or just its sculptural shade, you can change how these patterns fall across the walls, creating a different composition with each position.
Simplicity and detail
Nemunda combines a quiet simplicity with the richness of natural materials and handcrafted detail.
In daylight, the dome’s dark resin creates an elegant background for the plants preserved within it. It harmonizes with the adjoining green-toned surface, made from acrylic resin and particles of stabilized wood, while the white carvings and intricate openwork add contrast and depth.
Together, these elements form a harmonious, organic sculpture.
The Making of Nemunda
For me, Nemunda marks an important new step — a lamp born from experimentation and the need to keep moving beyond what I have created before.
Each of the three sections of Nemunda’s sculptural shade was a new and exciting challenge: creating the dome with plants embedded in resin; filling the carved pattern with acrylic resin mixed with fine particles of stabilized wood, and then carving into the inlaid surface; and finally, shaping the openwork section.
Geometry of the Pattern
The geometry of Nemunda’s pattern is based on a regular dodecahedron. The carved areas filled with resin follow the same underlying pattern as the openwork carvings.
Plants Embedded in Resin
To embed the plants in the lamp’s dome, I first had to reproduce its shape precisely by making a silicone mould of this part of the gourd. This allowed me to create a resin dome that fits the gourd perfectly.
Another challenge was finding the right colour and translucency for the resin. During the day, it had to form a dark, elegant background for the plants, while at night it needed to transmit just the right amount of light.
The result is beautiful both by day and by night.
